Teaming up with Habitat for Humanity ReStores at AltBuild Expo in Santa Monica

Please visit our NEW WEBSITES:

We are thrilled to be joining one of our favorite organizations, Habitat For Humanity of Greater Los Angeles’ ReStores at this year’s Alt Build Expo in Santa Monica.  It will be great to be able to illustrate what the community has to gain from our collaboration.

This is the 10th year of the expo and we love participating because the city of Santa Monica really understands the importance of “green” building. This expo is one of the most established Green events in the country and each year it attracts professionals, homeowners and experts from a variety of industries and environmentally responsible organizations. We enjoy the opportunity to talk with industry professionals about their strategies, as well as homeowners about the importance and many benefits of deconstruction and ReUse!

PLEASE VISIT US IN BOOTHS #52 & #53!

There is a direct benefit to the environment and community through the efforts of deconstruction and reuse of building materials, including supporting the building of affordable homes and ensuring materials are repurposed and diverted from local landfills.  We are one of the largest providers of building materials and interior home fixtures for HFH GLA’s ReStores in Gardena and Norwalk and we hope that by teaming up at this year’s expo, word will spread and we can increase those efforts!

This year’s expo will be held May 10 and 11, 2013 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and we encourage all of you to attend!

We Started a Home Deconstruction in Malibu Today

Please visit our NEW WEBSITES:

Today we have another project kicking off in Malibu.  The hillside behind this home had shifted, creating big cracks in the walls and making the structure unsound. The house needed to be removed and fortunately the owners opted to deconstruct and donate. We'll be saving some nice cabinetry and fixtures along with all the home's lumber. And good news, the hardwood flooring was not glued down and will be salvageable for reuse!

Please visit our NEW WEBSITES:

We were thrilled to have a recent Hermosa Beach home deconstruction featured on the local Patch this week.  We are grateful to homeowners Bonnie MacLeod and Dr. David Brenner for choosing DRN to deconstruct their home and for helping us spread the word.

Be sure visit our Photo Gallery for more photos from this and other homes we have deconstructed in California.

My Thoughts on this Deconstruction Article from the Wall Street Journal

Please visit our NEW WEBSITES:

There have been many news articles and video segments on deconstruction over the years, but never in such a prominent publication as the Wall Street Journal. Most of the previous pieces, as is the case with this article, understandably approach the subject from a somewhat superficial standpoint appropriate for a layman's audience.

Much of the activity in this industry is in the west, especially in the Bay Area near the Silicon Valley in California. Within our industry's national internal dialog, the San Francisco Bay Area is often referred to as The Wild, Wild West of deconstruction, due to all the various individuals grabbing for the spoils of an industry built on selling questionable tax deductions every bit as much as it sells deconstruction.

I applaud Pui-Win Tam’s great work covering this topic and I hope this article will be a tipping point for Kamala Harris, California's Attorney General, to focus on the many players in the Bay Area that are routinely breaking California laws in their solicitation of donations for deconstruction. Purely for-profit "professionals" like appraisers, contractors, and store owners who have blatant conflicts of interest are selling materials and offering big tax deductions without any benefit going to any non-profit, whatsoever.

As president of a California Non-profit that deconstructs homes, I often cringe a bit when I see certain names mentioned in articles that otherwise promote our industry. I am hopeful we will see more reporting on this and more extensive vetting of these sources to ensure they are operating within the law.
